eBook Writing Tips on How to Proofread Your eBook

eBook Writing Tips - Do You Know How to Proofread?

I often come across articles or eBooks that have obviously not been edited or proofread. In fact, some articles contain so many errors that you know the author has either copied the article, or has been too lazy to even read the article. Some articles are copied from websites and contain all of the “remains” of html coding. Again, the person using that article has been too lazy to format the article properly.

If your eBook is littered with spelling and grammatical errors then you will only lose credibility as a professional or respected author.

Not everyone has the necessary skills for proof reading. I am one such author that requires the assistance of a professional to proofread all of my eBooks. I often pick up errors during the reading of my first draft, yet I know that there are many more that I have not picked up on.

Proof reading also requires time. If you do not have the time then it would be worth hiring the services of someone who does.

Here Are Some Tips for Improving on Your Proof reading Skills:

    1. Be Alert and Focused

Always proof read when you are alert and can focus on your specific task. Proofreading late at night is often not a good idea for most as this is when your mind and body are starting to wind down.

    2. Read Out Loud

This is one technique used by experts. You will not be able to skim over words as you would if just reading the text in silence. Reading out loud will often identify problems with sentence structure and the flow of the eBook. Not to mention highlighting grammatical errors.

    3. Use Spell Check!

This is a great tool, but only if you use it correctly! One common error is to not “Correctly” set the country setting. English is different in the USA, England and Australia. Use spell check to help you, but don't completely rely on it as its interpretation of words is not always correct.

Some of you reading this article will find spelling that you believe are incorrect. Some of our articles are written by contributors from the USA, England and Australia. Even though they are all English speaking countries, they vary on how they spell certain words!

    4. Use a Thesaurus.

Again, this is helpful but the range of words can be limited and not appropriate for your style of writing.

    5. Capitalise All Beginning Letters of a Sentence.

As we have done with this article!

    6. Capitalise People's Names

    David, david!

    7. Capitalise “I' No Matter Where it is.

    8. Look at Sentence Structure.

This includes sentence fragments. Does the sentence “flow?”

Let's Take Proof reading One Step Further and Look at the Content:

    1. Is the author staying on message or starting to ramble?

    2. Is the author proving his / her point and providing evidence to back up their point?

    3. Has the author incorporated enough ideas into each section?

    4. Doe the content flow smoothly?

    5. Does the author jump around from one key point to another?

    6. Does one chapter flow on to the next?

    7. Does each chapter start by capturing the reader's attention?

    8. Is there a distinct conclusion to each chapter?

Proof reading is an essential component of every successful eBook. A poorly written eBook full of spelling and grammatical errors is very off putting for the reader.

My eBooks often go through at least three proof readers, including myself. This way I know that I have given my eBook the best chance for success.
