eBook Writing Tips - How to Avoid Writers Block!
“Writer's block” can very frustrating and annoying for an author. It delays the progress of your eBook and also the publication date. All writers suffer from this in some form, some just more than others. So what actually is writers block?
Writer's block is an author's sudden inability to make any progress writing their eBook.
Writer's block tends to occur more often when a writer is under pressure. It may be pressure to meet publication deadlines or pressure from within. The main advantage of self publishing is that this deadline date is often removed. Unlike traditional publishing houses that may have set a date for you to finish your book. As a self published author you have the ability to have a “moving” deadline thus removing this stress.
Have a Detailed Plan!
The one common answer provided by most successful authors I have spoken to about writer's block is that “having a detailed plan” before starting an eBook can go a long way to preventing writers block.
A plan keeps you focused, provides structure and allows you to build content based on your plan. It is basically a road map that will guide you in what to do next when you do suffer from a mental block. The more you plan upfront, the easier the writing process will be, and the increased likelihood of finishing your eBook on time. This is essential if you have promoted a release date for your eBook.
A key component of your plan is “content development” and deciding on how much time you will devote daily to writing and achieving progress. You will also find writing a more enjoyable experience if you have a plan to help you.
Not all authors suffer from writers block. I will be one to acknowledge that there are times when I slow down in my writing, but I have yet to experience “writer's block.”
I believe a lot has to do with being a non-fiction author. I have found that fiction authors are the ones who experience this more than other authors.
Writer's Block Won't Last Forever Unless You Let it!
The more experienced authors know when they are beginning to struggle with their writing. They know what strategies to implement to help them get past these feelings.
Some of These Strategies Include:
1. Learn to Relax and Re-evaluate Goals.
Most people become stressed when they fear the consequences of what will happen. And as we know the majority of fears never eventuate.
2. Stay on Track and Don't Become Distracted!
Too many authors become distracted by personal issues in their life, new ideas or ventures popping in to their head or allowing others to take away valuable writing time.
3. Get Back to Your Writing Plan!
Read over your plan and move on to the next chapter if you feel that you are ready to go with that one. You can always come back and add more content to each chapter if need be. Remember that writing is a process.
4. Connect With Fellow Authors!
One of the greatest assets we provide in our eBook author community is the ability for authors to communicate with each other and help out when needed. Propose questions in a forum, or even upload a sample chapter, and ask for tips to get beyond that point where you are stuck.
5. Write in Short Bursts!
Trying to designate long periods of time for writing will put pressure on you to produce quantity, rather than quality content. It is ok to only write for 30 – 60 minutes at a time and allow for the remaining time to be used to build and develop ideas. You shouldn't judge progress necessarily by how many pages or chapters you wrote in a session.
6. Build Confidence!
Build confidence by acknowledging just how much progress you have made. The confidence in knowing that you are further along in your writing will help to spur you to the end.
7. Perfection Will Hinder Your Progress!
Any eBook, or book, I have written has gone through many revisions after proof reading. I don't expect to produce a perfect eBook after my first draft. So, don't spend too much time correcting spelling or grammatical errors. This will hinder your creativity and slow down your progress.
8. Plan the Next Writing Session!
I always have an idea of what I will write the next time I sit down and recommence my eBook. I don't dwell too much on the content, I just have an idea of the main points that I will write about. This is enough to give me the confidence in knowing that I will be fine the next time I site down to write.
9. Writing Should Be Fun!
If you are not enjoying writing then you need re-evaluate why you are writing. I love writing. I hated it in high school, but now I look at it as a way to teach and educate others. Writing is just the tool I use to do this.
10. Write About Something Else!
If you are stuck on one key point, and are suffering from writers block, then move on and only come back to it when you have fresh ideas.
11. Ask a Friend or Family Member for Ideas!
They may be able to give enough ideas to re-ignite your thoughts and get you started again. You can also surf the internet for ideas.
12. Don't Compare Yourself to Other Writers!
We all write at varying speeds so write at your own pace. There are too many people who state that you must write a certain amount per sitting. This ideology is what causes stress to the author if they cannot meet such goals.
13. Take a Break When Needed!
It is ok to take the weekend off writing or go out and enjoy spending time with family and friends. If you find your writing is getting in the way of your family or social life then set some goals to that you don't feel pressure.
I hope that these tips will help you to overcome writers' block if you ever do suffer from it.
Ultimately I believe writer's block mainly comes about when you are feeling stressed and under pressure to meet deadlines.
